Governors

South Nottinghamshire Academy is an Academy serving the Cotgrave, Radcliffe and Shelford Communities. We are committed to meeting the needs of every student by being prepared, being considerate and being the best we can. The Local Governing Body can be contacted via

The Chair of Governors, South Nottinghamshire Academy, Crpwell Road, Radcliffe on Trent, Nottingham. NG12 2FQ

The Purpose of the Governing Body

The Local Governing Body is comprised of six parent governors, five community governors, three staff governors and the HeadTeacher. A governor's term is generally four years and as vacancies arise either at the end of a term or otherwise elections are held for parent and staff governors and appointments of community governors may be made. For the election of parent governors, applications to be made on the prescribed form are invited from all parents and are notified to all parents.  If you would like to find out more about becoming a governor please contact the Chair of Governors via the school office.

School Governing Bodies have a responsibility to help the school deliver the best possible education for all students. As outlined in guidance from the DCSF (Department of Children, Schools and Families) this is done by:

  • Working strategically to raise standards
  • Monitoring and evaluating progress
  • Supporting and challenging the Head Teacher and the staff
  • Accounting to all stakeholders for the school’s overall performance.

The governing body works together with the Head Teacher whose responsibilities are:

  • The internal organisation, management and control of the school
  • Formulating and revising aims, objectives, policies and targets for the governing body to consider
  • Providing governors with the information needed to help raise standards
  • Advising and implementing the governing body’s strategic framework
  • Reporting on progress at least once a term

Deborah Giles
Chair of Governors

I am a Community Governor and parent of two daughters currently at the Academy..

I have lived in Radcliffe since 1999 and have links with many groups in the village, including the Advice Centre and the recently formed Radcliffe Family Playdays community play scheme.

A lawyer by background, I currently work in the area of Wills and Probate. I believe firmly in equal access to education and opportunity and am proud to be part of the team at the Academy which strives to deliver this.

Dan Philpotts

Dan Philpotts
Head of Academy

I have been lucky enough to work at the Academy for over 12 years and am now in the privileged position of Head of Academy. I am responsible for all areas of the Academy’s performance and development and take the principal role over leadership and management, budget, standards and improvement. In developing and embedding the ‘SNA Way’, students are at the heart of everything we do and we will continue to provide an educational experience where they can flourish through enjoyment and challenge in order to fulfil their potential.

I am married with two young boys both at primary school. As a keen sportsman, I played for Wolverhampton Wanderers FC up to U18 and Reserve level, and more recently have competed for Great Britain in the European Age Group Triathlon championships.

I believe that SNA should be the first choice school for everyone in the local community and with the Academy going from strength to strength; I look forward to seeing this come to fruition.

She has a daughter who commenced her secondary education at South Nottinghamshire Academy in September 2014, who has flourished and developed both academically and personally.

Professionally, Kate is a registered general nurse and studying for a PhD. She has an interest in reducing the inequalities in health which can be achieved only by individuals gaining a robust education which will equip them for life. As a Governor, she is keen to ensure that teachers treat children as individuals and bring out the best in their skills.

Mark Woodford

Emma Dones
Staff Governor

It has been an enormous priviledge to work at South Nottinghamshire Academy for the last three years. I completed my teacher training here and was challenged, nurtured and developed by the fantastic teaching staff here. I see the way that students grow in independence in much the same way as I did throughout my training, and it is fantastic to see how students progress here.

I teach English at the school and I am well-travelled and have lived in many different cities; I hope that this informs the way in which I interract with people from different places. This is an exciting time to be part of South Nottinghamshire Academy and I am delighted to be a part of its future.

Anna Cox
Staff Governor

You could describe this Academy as one of the cornerstones of my life. I have worked here for over 25 years and lived within the community for 18. It is a testimony to the exceptional quality of pupils at this Academy that living and working within this community has been nothing but a joy

I met my husband, who used to work in the English department here, both of my children attended the school, leaving it, I felt, thoroughly prepared to take a place in the world. Whilst there has been considerable change over the years, the constant has been the most wonderful of students, who it has and continues to be a pleasure and a privilege to teach. I am excited to be part of the Governing body at this time as we look forward to moving into our new build.
