Rationale – Why is Homework important?

"Homework is not an optional extra, but an essential part of a good education."

Homework is work that is set to be done outside the timetabled curriculum. It contains an element of independent study and is crucially important in raising student achievement by enabling students to develop essential study skills pivotal to academic success.

Aims – Homework enables pupils to……..

• Consolidate and extend work covered in class or prepare for new learning activities.
• Access resources not available in the classroom.
• Develop research skills.
• Have an opportunity for independent work.
• Show progress and understanding.
• Enhance their study skills e.g. planning, time management and self-discipline.
• Take ownership and responsibility for learning.
• Engage parental co-operation and support.

How will Homework be set?

Homework will be set verbally in class by class teachers. All homework will then be added to ClassCharts.  This website allows parents and students to see what homework has been set for their child, accompanying instructions and advice, links to supporting documents (e.g. video clips), and when the homework is due in.

Website or App

Students and Parents can access the website by using the link on the school website, via the ClassCharts App, or via a search engine in a browser.  The free ClassCharts app can be downloaded via I-Tunes and Google Play stores. The app allows users to access their homework on a variety of mobile devices and is the preferred method of access for SNA parents and students. SNA will provide all parents with login details for ClassCharts access.

Students who do not have internet access at home will be able to access the website through the school ICT systems and will be able to attend the study support and homework sessions. These homework sessions take place before and after school or students can use the school library computers to complete homework during break time or lunchtime.

Monitoring of Homework

Student Rewards – Students will be rewarded for their homework in a variety of ways in line with the school rewards policy.

Student Sanctions – If students do not complete homework they may receive sanctions in line with the school behaviour policy. 

Homework is not optional, as it is so crucial in helping all learners reach their potential.

Internal Monitoring of Homework – The quality of homework will be regularly checked by school leaders through a variety of quality assurance procedures.

The role of the Parent

The role of the parent is crucial if a child is to experience success from homework. To reinforce its value through positive feedback will give students the confidence to persevere, work hard and reach high standards of achievement.

Parents can assist by:

1. Providing a table, chair and a quiet place to work.
2. Negotiating with the student when homework is to be done as a student's free play is important too.
3. Checking the time spent on individual tasks.
4. Checking presentation and content of all homework being returned to school.
5. Monitoring and tracking the homework setting and completion by using the Show My Homework parent facility
